Bamboo Housing

The Cubicolo House has been awarded as Runner Up at he Bamboo Housing Challenge organized by Bamboo U and Base from over 60 entries.
Cubicolo is a modular house that can present itself in several forms. Thanks to a 2.7-meter square grid, it allows for a wide range of configurations using just five types of prefabricated bamboo panels. This standardized system enables flexibility without increasing construction costs.
Climate responsiveness relies on passive strategies such as cross ventilation, elevated construction, and shaded facades, ensuring year-round comfort. Inspired by Balinese vernacular architecture, including familiar roof forms, Cubicolo creates a culturally relevant and welcoming living environment.
By relying on a limited set of repeatable elements, Cubicolo adapts to different users, family sizes, and evolving needs while remaining scalable, affordable, and easy to build.
The clarity of the modular system allows future residents to participate in the design process from the earliest stages through workshops and collaborative sessions, instilling pride and belonging to the new community of users.

Bamboo
The project prioritizes the use of bamboo as main material, for the building structure and interior, as much as possible in form of prefabricated elements in order to optimize construction costs: the walls are Composite Bamboo Shear Wall (CBSW) panels, and the prefabricated trusses are made of bamboo poles.
Durability is addressed through reinforced concrete strip footings and a plinth beam that elevates the house to prevent flooding. The facades are protected by large roof eaves that shield them from sun and rain. The clay plaster covers the bamboo wall structure, reducing maintenance and improving the structures longevity.
